Careers

The Grand Rapids African American Health Institute is a leading national organization devoted to achieving healthcare parity for African Americans. Driven by research and committed to education and advocacy, GRAAHI aims to create awareness and develop programs that achieve positive health outcomes for all communities. The organization seeks to ensure that all people have optimal health care and benefit from health systems without race being an impediment. GRAAHI operates under four pillars of service: Community, Advocacy, Research and Education (CARE)

History

The Grand Rapids African American Health Institute was established in 2002 in response to a growing body of evidence suggesting vast differences in health and health care outcomes for African Americans. Staggering data from the Kent County Health Department, state and national government substantiated the need for an intentional effort to ensure that adequate attention was given to addressing racial/ethnic inequities in health. GRAAHI works to eliminate such inequities at both the health systems level and the community level, an approach taken to maximize effectiveness.

Mission

To eradicate health disparities for African Americans by influencing health policy and practice through community engagement, advocacy, research and education.

Vision

To ensure that all West Michigan residents have optimal health care and benefit from health systems without race being an impediment.
